Most of the jobs I did before becoming a stay at home dad were reasonably enjoyable and fulfilling. There were a few though before I really got into the working world that I would consider were my worst jobs. They weren’t bad jobs; I just wasn’t very good at them.
Two of the jobs in particular I really hated doing and I didn’t last too long in them either. I wasn’t too bothered when they didn’t work out!
When I was still at school I worked at a local garden centre. I had to wear a luminous lemon sweatshirt and a name badge. I’d assumed that I’d just be helping out with moving stuff and stacking shelves. It wasn’t quite as simple as that.
They would often get me to work the till or walk around the site looking for people who might need some help. The trouble is I knew absolutely nothing about gardening or plants. The till had this complicated system of codes you had to use depending on the type of plant purchased. I don’t imagine I got many of them right!
The worst job I ever had was working nights in the Chrysler Building. I was part of a team of about five guys, and we polished the leather furniture.Gene Hackman
I found myself drawn to the information shed in the outside area of the garden centre. There was a guy based there who knew his stuff when it came to gardening. I figured if I was going to learn anything I may as well tag along with him. It also kept me away from the till!
Working in the local garden centre only lasted a few months before they decided to get rid of some of their school age employees. I can’t say I wasn’t relieved or even surprised. I knew for sure I didn’t want to work in a garden centre again!
I went to Edinburgh University in the early nineties. In my third year, myself and a flatmate thought strawberry picking might be a good way to earn some money one summer. It turned out to be one of the hardest working days of my life.
Getting up at the crack of dawn and getting two buses out to the farm were my idea of hell at the time. I couldn’t believe how many people turned up though. It was back-breaking work bending down to pick strawberries and having a high quota to hit. I wasn’t exactly quick at it.
My worst job was working in the laundry of a nursing home.Rickie Lee Jones
I remember feeling inadequate as I watched other fruit pickers sprinting passed me with baskets of harvested strawberries. When you consider you get paid by the weight of fruit you’ve picked, it’s in your interest to work as fast as possible. First gear was the only one I could find.
I was in awe of the people who turned up for fruit picking day in day out but it wasn’t for me. I just wasn’t fast enough and as a result it didn’t offer any incentive moneywise to keep at it. Two days is all I lasted and then I pulled the plug!
What Was Your Worst Job?
My worst jobs aren’t all that bad. You may have done something much worse to earn some cash. What would you consider your worst job to have been?
