One of my favourite places to visit in the Bernese Oberland is Grindelwald First.
I love taking the gondolier cable cars up from Grindelwald all the way up to First.
You get such a fantastic view over the Grindelwald valley, to the impressive mountains and all the way up to Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen.
My wife and I always remember the fantastic walks we’ve had from the Schynige Platte train station past the Faulhorn and Bachalpsee down to First.
First Cliff Walk By Tissot
A short walk from the top gondolier station is the First Cliff Walk.
It’s a nerve-tingling walk along a metal walkway suspended from the cliff face.
The walkway is sturdy but you can see through it to the ground far below.
I was surprised that my kids wanted to do it.
They were both up for it though and found the experience exhilarating.
At one point the walkway turns into a metal suspension bridge which sways a bit.
It’s a long way down although you never feel unsafe.
One of the walk starts at the cafe at Grindelwald First where you can stop off for a snack or a meal with spectacular views.
Near the cafe, there’s a section of the walk which has a viewing platform overlooking the valley.
It’s a perfect place to take in the views and get a picture taken against the amazing backdrop.
When we were there, the queue to get a selfie was quite long but it’s well worth the wait!
If you’re feeling adventurous, when you get to Grindelwald First, there’s a beautiful lake a couple of hours walk into the mountains.
From the Bachalpsee, you can get some great views over to the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch.
We didn’t manage to make it there on this holiday with the kids.
It’s an easy enough hike but it’s two and a half hours uphill which we thought was too much for them at this stage.
It’s a shame because the views really are worth the extra slog you have to put yourself through to get there.
Walking Down The Valley
Instead of getting straight back on the gondolier, on the way down we decided to walk to the next station.
It was a chance for some marmot-spotting and to take in some of the scenery.
My daughter loved seeing all the cows grazing in the meadows and spotting other wildlife on and around the slopes.
We got back onto the gondolier at the next station instead and took the cable car back down into Grindelwald.
You can find out more about Grindelwald First in the video below.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, Grindelwald First is one of my favourite places to visit.
I can’t get enough of the breathtaking views and the fresh air.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can go back there again.
