The summer holidays have started with a vengeance and it’s that time of year again when keeping the kids entertained is an ongoing struggle.
I’m determined this year that we’ll get out and about in the fresh air as much as we possibly can.
Things like forest walks, going to the beach and visiting the local park are top of the list.
With eight weeks to fill, anything that doesn’t cost the earth is worth considering.
One of our favourite places to go is Vogrie Country Park.
Vogrie Country Park
Vogrie Country Park is situated not far from Gorebridge and is about 12 miles from Edinburgh.
It’s over 250 acres of parkland and woodland to explore, with 11.5 miles of signed countryside paths through the woods and Tyne Valley.
Apart from exploring the park, other things for kids to do include:
- An adventure playground;
- A miniature railway;
- Picnic areas and open lawns; and,
- Regular events such as pond dips for children.
If you get a sunny day, it’s a great place to meet up with other families for a fun day out.
There’s loads of room to kick a football, to fly a kite or to throw a frisbee.
The miniature railway runs from March to September on Sunday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm.
Vogrie also hosts it’s own parkrun on a Saturday morning at 9.30am.
Cedar Tree Cafe
If you get a bit peckish whilst you’re enjoying the park, you can always drop into the Cedar Tree Cafe.
It’s open seven days a week during the school holidays between 10am and 4pm.
It’s closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when schools are in session.
There’s an under 5’s soft play area adjacent to the cafe, where there are also books to read and a space to draw.
They do great teas and coffees and have some tasty tray bakes and other tempting treats available.
You can also buy ice lollies, drinks and snacks for the kids there too.
There’s seating inside as well as picnic tables outside if the weather’s behaving itself.
If golf’s your thing then Vogrie Country Park has you covered.
There’s a 9-hole “pay as you play” golf course set within the park.
It’s open from 7.30am every day and the last round starts 2 hours before dusk.
Don’t forget to book at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability.
Something To Remember
Vogrie Country Park is open 365 days of the year from 7.30 am to dusk.
If you visit between 11am and 7pm though remember to bring £1.
That’s the charge for the car park and there’s a barrier as you exit the car park.
It takes the new pound coins.
