I don’t do spontaneous.
It’s just not in my blood.
I budget for practically everything down to the penny.
But yesterday I broke all of my rules and splashing out on a family trip to Grindelwald.
I Love Switzerland
I’ve been to Switzerland quite a few times since a friend of mine introduced me to its delights in my early twenties.
But it’s been more than ten years since I was there and I’d love to go back.
My wife and I went there on our honeymoon and it’d be nice to show the kids our old stomping grounds.
The trouble is getting there costs an arm and a leg.
And when you get there, it costs you your other arm and leg.
But the lure of Switzerland; Grindelwald, Interlaken and the rest of the Bernese Oberland, has never left us.
Beach Holidays Aren’t For Me
Since the kids came along we’ve not been abroad other than to visit family in Ireland.
We usually stay in the UK and whilst that’s easy and convenient, the weather’s not always the best.
I’m not a beach holiday kind of person.
Spending hours lying on the beach or sitting around a pool doesn’t interest me.
We thought about Spain but ruled it out. The same with Florida.
Theme parks aren’t something we enjoy either.
It’s Not A Frivolous Whim
It’s not been the easiest of years.
My wife works hard and doesn’t have an easy time of it at work.
The kids spend so much time at school and have also been working hard.
And since we don’t drink or smoke, go out for meals or to the pub, we need something to look forward to.
We’ve also mentioned Teddyland to my daughter a few times and she’s desperate to go there.
It seems like we’ve been talking about going back to Switzerland ever since we were last there.
It’s always been in the back of our minds.
Grindelwald Here We Come!
It’s over a year away but the countdown until we go to Grindelwald has begun.
We opted for self catering to keep the cost down, although we’ll get a buffet breakfast every morning.
It’s great that we can fly direct from Edinburgh.
Having to change to a connecting flight at London Heathrow is always a bit of a nightmare.
I’ve never stayed in Grindelwald before, only Interlaken, Wengen and Zermatt.
It will be a new experience in that regard.
One which I’m very much looking forward to.
