Bringing up my daughter has been an uphill journey so far but we’ve managed to tick off another milestone.
From an early age she had hearing problems which in turn affected her speech.
The insertion of grommets into her ears sorted out the hearing problems a while back but the speech was still a work in progress.
We started out using the NHS speech therapy service in our local area to help but for many reasons it was inadequate.
Finding a private speech therapist that could help was a godsend.
I remember when we first reached out to the private speech therapist it felt like my daughter had a mountain to climb.
She was backing sounds and missing letters off the ends of words.
The NHS speech therapist said it would take many years to correct everything.
Yet here we are just over two years since we found a decent speech therapist and my daughter has been signed off.
Her speech has improved significantly and she is now well within range of typical ability for her age.
And from start to finish with the private speech therapist it’s only taken two years for her to be discharged.
The money we’ve invested on getting this right for my daughter has been well worth it.
Another Milestone Is Just Around The Corner
In a couple of weeks time, my daughter has another hearing test.
At that point, she will also see the surgeon who operated on her ears and removed her adenoids.
Her hearing has been great since the grommets were fitted and this is likely to also be the final visit for a hearing test.
Currently one grommet is still in place, although I’m hoping that it may have dislodged itself.
They work their way out of the eardrum and then through the ear canal until they fall out of the ear.
It will be just in time for the summer holidays and would make visits to the swimming pool so much easier.
The Big 8
Whilst I’m closing in on middle age, my daughter will soon be reaching the grand old age of 8.
Yet another milestone in her eventful life.
I can’t believe how time has flown since she first came into the world.
I wouldn’t change a thing about her.
She knows her own mind and will let you know about it if she doesn’t agree with you.
She’s managed to get the artistic gene from my wife and loves drawing and creating works of art.
Compared to many of her peers she’s still very young and innocent.
But that’s how a 7 going on 8 year old should be.
