I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere in Lincolnshire.
Over the years I’ve moved around the UK and have lived mostly in cities or large towns.
Much of my extended family remains in Lincolnshire.
We try to make the trip down from Scotland to see them at least once a year.
The past few days we’ve been staying with my parents and my kids have had a ball.
My daughter was insistent that when we visit the grandparents again we had to go back to Sundown Adventureland.
It’s a theme park for the under 10’s and has always been a crowd pleaser with my kids.
We thought we’d give it one last visit since my son is now 10 and my daughter is 8.
They’ve almost grown out of the place but my daughter was so insistent.
There’s loads of kid friendly rides, interactive exhibits, play parks and a couple of big soft plays.
The place has lost it’s wow factor for both of my kids but they still enjoyed themselves.
My daughter wasn’t as keen on exploring the exhibits and going on the rides as she was a couple of years ago.
On the other hand, my son found it quite boring a couple of years back but had a great time this time around!
Another favourite place to visit when we travel to Lincolnshire is The Deep in Hull.
It’s one of the largest aquariums in the UK and has some spectacular viewing experiences over a number of floors.
The main tank houses some huge fish, sharks and turtles, including some manta rays.
There’s loads of interactive spaces to keep the kids interested.
There were loads of school kids there the day we went and it made it slow going.
Schools in the area hadn’t broken up for the holidays and they were getting in their end of year trips.
We spent quite some time watching the fish swim around the main large tank.
There were still plenty of opportunities to get a good view.
I noticed a quite distinctive odour when we first arrived at The Deep.
It wasn’t the most inviting of smells and I thought the toilets might be blocked!
I recognised the smell from somewhere else but couldn’t quite place it.
When we finally got to the section housing the penguins I realised where the smell was coming from.
It was the same smell I remember from Edinburgh Zoo!
A Day In Lincoln
My wife and I managed to escape from the kids one of the days we were in Lincolnshire as the grandparents took them to Rand Farm Park.
We needed to get some gear for our family trip to Switzerland in August so decided to visit Lincoln for the day.
It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been there and it’s changed quite a bit.
And it’s completely different to the place I grew up with.
There was no university then and Lincoln still had two separate train stations – St Marks and Lincoln Central.
As much as I could have taken or left Lincoln as a kid, I now see it’s merits and how handsome a city it is.
We spent the day shopping and wandering around the many historic buildings including the cathedral and castle.
It was nice to catch a bite to eat in Pizza Express without the kids!
Where we’d parked the car meant we had to go down and back up Steep Hill.
So at least we’d burnt off a few calories before and after having the pizza.
We did manage to stop off in one of the fudge shops though on the way back up!
